Theresa Huntley – Youth Ambassador Program with the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, the State Department of the United States of America

July 18 – August 6, 2016
Ottawa, ON; Plattsburgh, NY; Washington, D.C.
I was accepted as an Adult Mentor for the Youth Ambassador Program sponsored by the Department for Canadian Studies at SUNY Plattsburgh. The program was three weeks long and involved working with 15 youth from across Canada to develop, train for, and implement service projects in participants’ home communities. I was able to attend many sessions from various SUNY professors on Social Engagement, Diversity Training, Media Relationships, US/Canada relations, and Environmental Activism. A session at the WILD Center in the Adirondacks has led to working with another teacher in La Ronge to put together a division-wide eco-conference in the style of the WILD Center’s Youth Climate Change Summit. If successful, it will be the first youth summit of its kind in the North. The training is also directly applicable to an art program that I am starting with our local Community Programs Officer with the RCMP Detachment that will feature a mural making after-school club at Ducharme Elementary lead by high school students from the Dene High School. This program is slated to start in the winter. I found that I grew as an educator through this program. Exposure to students in different parts of Canada as well as the contacts I have made in various education fields in New York State have been inspiring and energizing for my career.
